Maher Arar courageously fought to hold Canadian authorities accountable for their role in his “extraordinary rendition” to Syria in 2002 where he was beaten, tortured and forced to sign a false confession. |
![]() | On September 18, 2006, the Commissioner of the Inquiry, Justice Dennis O'Connor, cleared Arar of all terrorism allegations. Arar’s wife, Monia, has written a memoir about her fight for Maher’s release from Syria, entitled Hope And Despair: My Struggle To Free My Husband, Maher Arar, in 2008. Maher and Monia continue to advocate for the full implementation of Justice O’Connor’s recommendations. |
