Bus Riders!

"117 new buses, expanded SkyTrain service, less crowding and greater availability . . . It's amazing what you can get for 25 cents"
-TransLink ad, May 2000

Last year TransLink, the Greater Vancouver transit authority, raised bus fares promising to improve service. But now they are cancelling orders for new buses, announcing cuts to service, and forcing a strike with bus drivers ( Canadian Auto Workers 111 ) who haven't had a pay increase in 11 years. The only bright spot in the local transit scenario is that transit workers, transit users, environmentalists and other activists are getting organized and fighting back. They spent a day together @ More Buses! Lower Fares! hearing presentations and strategizing in workshops.

One possible outcome will be formation of a Lower Mainland Bus Riders' Union, similar to that in Los Angeles, which has taken managed to wrest control of public transit away from the bureaucrats and given it back to the public.
