BC FED Health & Safety centre

The BC Fed Health & Safety centre was established in 2001 to offer health and safety education to Joint Committee members in BC workplaces. The B.C. Federation of Labour is the first labour organization that has received funding from the WCB to provide OH&S education to workers.

The Centre courses meet the criteria for the eight hours of annual health and safety education that is mandated

by the Workers' Compensation Act. The goal of the Centre's educational work is to assist Joint Committee members in the prevention of workplace injuries, fatalities and occupational diseases. The Centre has worked closely with unions and employers to ensure that workers are getting OH&S education every year.

Committee members have participated in the various courses offered and many people are returning year after year. Centre staff have travelled to 65 communities in BC to offer educational sessions reaching 1500 joint health and safety committee members each year. 30,000 students and young workers have participated in the Centre's high school program.

The Centre is also offering sessions for workers with English as an additional language, and with the Mexican migrant workers.
