1. Bordertown: the B.C. broadcast premier of this 38 minute documentary by Pat Harrison and Borys Kit. Bordertown presents the straight facts and lays out the complexity of the North American trade situation without jumping to judgements or easy answers.


Abandoned Factory

From Bordertown: Factory closed and abandoned in Cornwall Ontario. The owners moved operations to Maquiladora zones in Mexico to exploit some of the cheapest labour in the world.

 
Tijuana Border

Tijauna Mexico Border, just south of San Diego California - the busiest border crossing in the world.

 It moves from the Mexico-US frontier, where unemployed Mexican workers run the gauntlet of the U.S. Border Patrol, to San Diego, to Washington D.C., to Ottawa and finally to Cornwall Ontario, where formerly well-paid factory workers now work part-time in bingo parlours.

photo of members of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion Leaky condominiums like this one are a billion dollar problem here in the lower mainland. Tens of thousands of homeowners are affected. Last week the B.C. Federation of Labour, together with the New Westminster and Vancouver Labour councils, and the Provincial Council of Carpenters held a public meeting on leaky condominiums.
