Featuring: keynote speech by Toronto based CBC TV host and author, Judy Rebick;

 

Canadian Auto Workers union president Buzz Hargrove;

and comments from Murray Dobbin of the Council of Canadians and an award presentation of cash from the Council of Canadians to APEC Student Protestors.

 

Murray Dobbin presents award to APEC Student Protestor Annette Muttray. Award will be used for legal fees in the students ongoing legal battle against the RCMP and the Federal Government.

Solidarity special

1. Bordertown: the B.C. broadcast premier of this 38 minute documentary by Pat Harrison and Borys Kit. Bordertown presents the straight facts and lays out the complexity of the North American trade situation without jumping to judgements or easy answers.

From Bordertown: Factory closed and abandoned in Cornwall Ontario. The owners moved operations to Maquiladora zones in Mexico to exploit some of the cheapest labour in the world.   Tijauna Mexico Border, just south of San Diego California - the busiest border crossing in the world.

It moves from the Mexico-US frontier, where unemployed Mexican workers run the gauntlet of the U.S. Border Patrol, to San Diego, to Washington D.C., to Ottawa and finally to Cornwall Ontario, where formerly well-paid factory workers now work part-time in bingo parlours.     2. Union Organizing in Mexico's Maquila's - highlights from the solidarity campaign to support striking Han Young workers in Tijuana Mexico.

Public Meeting on Leaky Condominiums
held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Vancouver on April 14th 1998.

Leaky condominiums like this one are a billion dollar problem here in the lower mainland. Tens of thousands of homeowners are affected. Last week the B.C. Federation of Labour, together with the New Westminster and Vancouver Labour councils, and the Provincial Council of Carpenters held a public meeting on leaky condominiums.
