Webcast of January 16, 2005 memorial event for Jeannette "Jonnie Rankin" at the Ukrainian Hall in East Vancouver. Jonnie was a long time Vancouver socialist and activist, and friend and mentor and comrade to many thousands of people in Vancouver, across Canada and around the world. She died December 24, 2004. |

After moving to Vancouver in 1938 Jonnie Rankin found work and the labour and progressive movement in the North Vancouver shipyards, building "Liberty" ships during World War II. |

After the war she married Harry Rankin who became a well known progressive lawyer and civic politician. Jonnie devoted her life to the movement. She was active in the BC Peace Council, the People's Co-op Bookstore, the Canadian-Cuba Friendship Association, and COPE ( the Coalition of Progressive Electors, Vancouver's left civic party ) since its inception in 1968. |

The Rankin home in East Van was a meeting place for many that were attempting to advance the cause of human rights and dignity, and were striving to build a more equitable and socialist society. Also know as the "Hotel Rankin" it hosted many internationally known activists including Caesar Chavez, Pete Seeger, Earl Robinson and many others. Jonnie was a very political woman who became a mentor to many of the women who are in leadership positions today. More than anything else, she understood the human side of revolutionary politics and was warm and generous and forgiving within a movement that could be the opposite. |
