Mumia Abul Jamal & his son

Free Mumia! Pt. 1 of 3
beginning Friday February 11 on Rogers Television
working TV # 168, RT: 27:30 each

We mark Black History month with a series on Mumia Abul Jamal. He is an award winning journalist from Philadelphia, who was convicted of murdering a white policeman in 1982 and who has been on death-row ever since.

Mumia Abul Jamal incurred the wrath of authorities during the 1970's and early 1980's with print and radio reports documenting Philadelphia police brutality and corruption. At his trial, critical evidence was withheld from the defence and crucial witnesses were "away on holiday".

Our first program, Free Mumia!, which begins February 11 2000 on Rogers Television, provides history and background on Mumia's case. It is a compilation of 3 videos produced by Deep Dish Television and the People's Video Network in New York including Millions for Mumia, Death Row Notebook, and The Killing State. .

Ron Hampton, Executive-Director of the National Association of Black Police, "It is apparently clear that Mumia is innocent and ought not to be in jail, and ought not to be on Death Row"

Pam Africa, a key activist in the campaign to save Mumia, "All we are demanding is a fair trial."

Rage for Mumia! Part 2 of 3
first broadcast Friday February 18 on Rogers Television
working TV # 169, RT: 27:30 each

We continue our Black History month series on Mumia Abul Jamal with highlights from Rage for Mumia!, from the People's Video Network in New York. This video was taped at a Mumia Benefit concert in January 1999 featuring Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy and Chumbawumba.

"Mac-Pap" Monument Unveiling

Also this week we report on the Saturday February 12 2000 unveiling of a beautiful 7 foot tall bronze statue at the B.C. Legislature. Called the "Spirit of the Republic" it was created to honour the 1600 British Columbian members of the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion, or "Mac Paps", who volunteered to fight fascism in Spain during the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War. They were a division of the legendary International Brigades of volunteer anti-fascist fighters from 53 countries, who came to the aid of the infant Spanish Republic against a right-wing military coup.

This event was the culmination of years of campaigning both to secure the site at the Legislature, and to raise funds to have it produced. Nearly $70,000.00 was raised in an all volunteer grass-roots campaign.

The Killing State Part 3 of 3
first broadcast on Friday February 25 on Rogers Television
working TV # 170, RT: 27:30 each

We complete our Black History month series on Mumia Abul Jamal with highlights from The Killing State, by the People's Video Network and Deep Dish Television , both in New York.

Kill Crazed cops
Fraternal Order of Police
The American Fraternal Order of Police have been some of the strongest advocates for the death penalty. At this demo they target Mumia specifically.

Ron Hampton, head of the 30,000 member Association of Black Police, "We have been on the inside and we have seen what is going on . . . this brutal police department in the city of Philadelphia makes up its own history"

Ron Hampton
Fraternal Order of Police

This video looks at the struggle to save the life of Mumia Abul-Jamal, specifically, in the context of the larger struggle against the Death Penalty generally. It is an expose of the Philadelphia killing machine by journalist Cathy Scott who shows the growing struggle to bring back justice, focusing on the protests around Mumia. The Killing State video looks at the background of the growing culture of prison building, harsh penalties and increased repression in the United States. It also presents the significance of the case for the future ability of all of us to speak out and keep the right to dissent in a growing climate of deteriorating living conditions and corporate control of information.

Vancouver's Voice TV

(VVTV) A web-based working TV special project, for the 1999 Vancouver Civic Election

Vancouver's Voice is a coalition of the labour-backed COPE (Committee of Progressive Electors) and the Green Party, to challenge the right-wing / developer-controlled NPA ( or so called "Non-Partisan" Association ) in the 1999 Vancouver Civic election.

Since 1996, the city of Vancouver has endured one-party rule as the business/developer backed NPA has held all seats on Vancouver City Council, Vancouver Park Board and Vancouver School Board. The new Vancouver's Voice coalition is determined to bring democracy back to city government.

working TV's Heather Nicholas on the street, asking citizens about the issues that affect them, from one of 10 daily VVTV On The Street webcasts.

With barely 10% of the budget the NPA has for advertising, the COPE-Green coalition is using the web and e-mail to get the word out.

No more blurry jerky images with muffled and distorted sound!!! working TV has achieved our best quality webcasts ever with this campaign. With the use of a T1 internet connection, courtesy of Communicopia, we have been able to webcast, for the first time ever, at ASDL or LAN data rates of 220kps (compared to typical rates of 20kps or 34kps). Viewers with high-speed cable modems or ADSL connections have been able to watch VVTV webcasts with image and sound quality equivalent to broadcast television!
