Mac Paps Honoured in Ottawa

National Monument
to the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion Unveiled in Nation's Capital

National Monument to the "Mac Paps" in Ottawa

New "Mac Pap" Monument Unveiled, Saturday October 20, 2001 @ Green Island Park, Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

The "Mac-Paps", or members of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion were the first Canadian soldiers to fight against the fascist aggression that became World War 11. They volunteered to defend democracy in the Spanish Civil War ( 1936-39) fighting against Franco, Hitler and Mussolini.

Of the over 1546 volunteers who fought for liberty and democracy, many never returned and lie where they fell, in the soil of Spain. No national monument honoured their name or acknowledged their service to humanity. This was finally remedied, more than 60 years after the fact, at a ceremony in Ottawa on Saturday October 20, 2001.

Only three Mac Paps were able to attend: Maurice Constant, Arne Knudsen and Jules Paivio. About a dozen are still alive across the country. For more than sixty years they and their comrades were ignored by the Canadian government. Funding for the Ottawa monument came entirely from private donations.

Adrienne Clarkson

Adrienne Clarkson, the Governor General of Canada, Jose Cuenca Ayana, the Ambassador of the Government of Spain, and Jules Paivio, President of the Association of Veterans and Friends of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, among others, unveiled the new national monument to Canada's forgotten heros.

The design for the monument was selected through a juried competition, won by Oryst Sawchuck, a Sudbury architect and artist. The monument contains a five meter high sheet of corten steel out of which has been cut a silhouetted figure of Prometheus raising his arm toward the sun. The figure is mounted on a concrete pedestal bearing a memorial plaque which reads, in part: "The Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion (The Mac-Paps), Canadian Volunteers of the International Brigades, Spain, 1936-39". Adjacent to the monument is a memorial wall containing 52 stainless steel panels on which have been inscribed the names of the 1546 Volunteers.
