Woodwards Building opened by squatters & housing activists

SEPTEMBER 14, 2002:
Housing activists and squatters from the downtown eastside and around Vancouver opened the vacant 99 year old Woodwards Department store building for free housing. The courts issued an injunction on Monday September 16, that was followed on Tuesday with an enforcement order. Police asked the squatters to come up with a plan that would ensure a swift and peaceful resolution. They responded with the idea for a meeting with crucial decision makers and five accompanying demands for social housing and homeless shelters. They are refusing to leave till their demands are met.
